Thanks to the generosity
of a quilter friend, I just finished the piece to the left, a challenge that
could potentially take my quilting to the next level.

As
we embark upon another new year, and it seems like this story has
played out so many, many times before, it is time to think about new
quilting endeavors, not to mention completing some old ones.

It has been a busy year for me, for so many reasons, but my favorite part
was finishing this quilt top. I loved every minute of it. This is my version of "Homeward Bound

As mentioned in a prior post, Operation
Sewing Studio, I am in the process of converting a bedroom into a sewing
studio. While the space is starting to take shape, progress has been slow, but
steady.

I have a new focus, a
new way to use whatever energy I can muster at my age. I’m calling it Operation
Sewing Studio.

My latest quilt project actually began in January; it is a Block of the Month (BOM) originating from The Quilt Show,
free to Star members. I am proud to participate in the Quilt Show, a
valuable resource for quilters. I learn new things every time I sign on.

My quilt inventory keeps growing. For some, this might be a problem, but not for me.

I can't help but share the photo of my quilting cat, Sally.
Dec. 4, 2022
I can't believe I finally finished this. While it is only a quilt top
and remains a long way from becoming a completed quilt, I am totally
enamored with it.

Quilting
offers many challenges, which is what I love about it. But one of the most
mystifying, at least for me, has been the part of the process of marking the
quilt for quilting. No more. I have
found a product I love.Sept. 18, 2022
I was once terrified of needle-turn applique. So, when I glimpsed this year's Block of the Month project from The Quilt Show, one of my favorite on-line quilt experiences, I wasn't so sure I could handle this quilt, called "Garden Party Down Under."

A friend of mine was shopping for oversized pot holders to
purchase as Christmas gifts for family members. When she asked if I was interested in making a couple for
her, I hesitated, but only for a moment.

Hand sewing is just
not my thing, or is it?
Sept. 29, 2021
I now have a design
wall, a do-it-yourself portable, but functional design wall.

When my husband John and I retired, we downsized from a
five-bedroom house. While I miss the square footage, I don’t miss the upkeep. That
was the place however, where I made my first two quilts. The funny thing is, I
didn’t have a quilt studio then either.

I have been thinking I'd like to make a Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt, but I wasn't sure I was ready for all the work involved.
July 4, 2021
After 18 months, I finished my quilt.

I
first decided to hand quilt my latest quilt – “Afternoon Delight,” a 2020 Block
of the Month project designed by the late Sue Garman for The Quilt Show.

My quilting life has taught me many things. With over 25 years, some practices have become habit, and have provided some likes and dislikes.

Sometimes, hand-quilting just plain poses challenges.

Since CHMusings reflects my personal story, and quilting is such a huge part of my life, I've decided to retire my quilting blog CHQuilts and to integrate it into this space.Feb, 22, 2021
In this case, the finish is my latest quilt top; it is not quite a completed quilt, but to me, it is epic all the same...

I have never been a fan of marking the quilt. It is the one aspect of quiltmaking that I find often tedious and sometimes frustrating. I've tried different marking pens, pencils, pounces, chalks, and everything else I can think of...

Feb. 11, 2014
My last update on this project was nearly a month ago, my first blog post of the new year. I had just given up on trying to figure out how to complete this quilt top, daunted by mathematics, colors, and patterns, and style. So, I left ...

I can't believe this will be my first blog post of the new year. Heck, it doesn't even feel new anymore--it has been so long. In fact, since I was here last, I celebrated my 62nd birthday, gotten through ...
CH Musings: My quilting quandry, what to do?
Dec 11, 2013
Rendering Aqua-yellow quilt I really loved how Periwinkle Blue turned out. That is my most recent completed quilt. So I'm leaning toward doing this one the same way--quilt as you go (QAYG) with free-motion quilting each ...
CH Musings: Latest quilt pushes my color comfort zone
Sept. 17, 2013
Not only is my quilting obsession satisfied by a project I've been working on since January, which takes me out of my color comfort zone, but my "order thing" is getting a workout too. At the beginning of the year, I laid out some ...

"Periwinkle Blue," named for a song by Doris Day and my favorite crayon color, is finally done; well almost. It still needs the final binding on the edges. Then I will be able to throw it into the washer and dryer and see if it comes ...
Jan 28, 2013
Believe it or not, this is an entire quilt. I will call it Periwinkle blue after my favorite crayon color and song by Doris Day on an album my father used to enjoy. I started this project a year ago and thanks to two Craftsy classes, I'm ...

Lately, there have been a few forks in the road of my quilting quest. The latest took me down a dirt path--quite literally. I've been doing some gardening, thanks to the beautiful weather we have been having this Spring. Things ...

I want to make a new quilt--a yellow one. I have been collecting fabric, basically varieties of yellow, in the after Christmas online sales, my favorite being Fabric.com. The first decision was easy. I really knew I wanted to make a ...

As previously posted, I am really looking forward to following Leah Day's instruction to free-motion quilting last year's block of the month (BOM) sampler quilt. I am still in the decision-making phase of this project, but am ...
Nov 28, 2011
When I began this project, I had lots of fabric strips cut out, sorted by size and color and placed into a huge basket. I had some squares completed. But that was before our cat had her kittens. The babies were so much more fun ...

I am attempting to teach myself to machine quilt. I remember the first time I saw stippling used on a quilt. It was at a quilt show in Peotone, Illinois, where I first got bitten by the quilting bug. This small project, hanging in the First ...
Jan 14, 2013
A few months ago, I set out to learn free motion quilting. I am making some headway, thanks to the excellent advice and technique taught by Leah Day, who is probably the best machine quilter I've ever seen. Her work looks ...
Feb 05, 2012
I have finally finished my yellow quilt top. I love the design, but I'm a tad disappointed that the stars don't quite pop as much as I would have liked. I think I was so conscious of they're being too bright that I toned it down a little ...
Mar 16, 2012
So far, this is a good day; I've had a success both on the computer side, and as a quilter. Computer successes always make my day. Since the purchase of my new computer with Windows 7 (I know 8 is already out), almost a ...

This week I forged on--past anywhere I had gone before--way out of the comfort zone of my quilting life thus far. Up until now, I had taken baby steps forward, slowly, a little at a time, trying new things. I was smitten by a pattern ...

My quilting obsession continues! I just created a quilted table runner over the weekend. It is just a little something I put together to blend the green of the kitchen and dining room with the mauve of the living room. The fabric in ...

I actually designed this quilt around that polka dot fabric. I have always had a thing for dots. I once covered the walls of my bedroom, when I still lived at my parents' house, with lavender paisley contact paper. I thought the ...

It is only Jan. 8th. My apologies. for starting my first blog of the new year a full eight days into it. The truth is I've been busy following my primal instincts to organize. My body clock is somewhat confused. It can't discern whether ...

I'm not sure what has come over me, but I believe I'm trying to become a quilter. On the recent quilting board I joined the other day, I decided to participate in a block of the month project. The finished quilt will be a sampler, ...
Jan 25, 2012
I've taken a little time off from working on my quilt, largely so I can try to sit up straight again, shoulders back, and without pain. When I get involved in something, I tend to work on it til it hurts. I do the same thing with Jigsaw ...
Jan 02, 2012
Thanks to a quilting pro friend of mine, who does longarm quilting and does some of the most beautiful work I've ever seen, I learned that my bobbin tension needed adjustment as evidenced by the photo. That makes sense.
Jul 29, 2012
I am still hand-quilting on my yellow quilt, but I thought a little diversity might be nice for a change. I ripped 1" strips from the cotton fabric that I wasn't crazy about. I cut 1" strips from the green knit fabric. I started braiding, and ...
